Operation Flipper

Beda Littoria, Libya 1941-11-17 to 1941-11-18

Overview

Operation Flipper was a commando raid targeting General Erwin Rommel's headquarters in North Africa. Led by Lieutenant Colonel Geoffrey Keyes, the mission aimed to kill or capture the Desert Fox and disrupt German command.

Obscure Facts & Hidden Details

Keyes was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for leading the raid personally. His force landed by submarine, navigated through minefields and barbed wire, and assaulted what they believed was Rommel's headquarters.

The target building was actually a forward aid station. Keyes was killed leading the assault. Rommel was elsewhere, but the raid demonstrated that British commandos could strike at the heart of German operations.

Geoffrey Keyes's body was found on the doorstep of the building, having been shot through the chest while trying to kick in the door. His VC citation noted his 'outstanding bravery.'
